Environment and Regeneration

The objective of the department is to maintain and where possible, to improve, the local environment and the economic success of the borough. We aim to create a safer, healthier, attractive, more accessible and sustainable environment, to increase economic regeneration and create improved opportunities for Islington’s residents, businesses and visitors, both now and in the future.

The department is responsible for the provision of the following services:

Greenspace and Leisure

Greenspace and Leisure is responsible for the management of Islington's open spaces, squares, greens and parks, running them in the best interests of the local community and of the natural environment. The service also manages Islington's public leisure centres and sports facilities as well as Islington and Camden’s Cemeteries and Crematorium.

This service is also responsible for:

  • the ecology centre
  • the energy centre
  • trees in public places
  • childrens play areas in parks
  • events in parks
  • sustainability

Planning

Planning is responsible for dealing with planning applications, planning enforcement, planning appeals and public inquiries, advertisement applications, and the Planning Enquiries Office.

This service is also responsible for:

  • area renewal strategies
  • the census and development monitoring
  • Channel Tunnel Rail Link and other major rail projects
  • conservation and design
  • listed buildings
  • Local Development Framework
  • landscape projects
  • ordnance survey and mapping
  • planning briefs
  • privately-owned trees
  • Unitary Development Plan

Public Protection

The Public Protection division is responsible for:

  • animal welfare
  • building control
  • environmental health
  • food safety
  • health and safety
  • licensing applications
  • pest control
  • noise and pollution
  • trading standards

Regeneration

The Regeneration division is responsible for the following services:

  • adult learning
  • arts resources
  • community development
  • neighbourhood and town centre management
  • urban regeneration

Street Management

The Street Management division is responsible for the following services:

  • abandoned vehicles
  • bulky refuse
  • cleansing
  • highways maintenance
  • recycling
  • refuse collection
  • road safety
  • skips
  • street lighting
  • transport planning
  • traffic schemes
  • waste management and enforcement
