Dog mess
I have lived in Islington for two years now and there is so much dog mess everywhere. It is not always so easy to avoid, and why should I spend my life looking downwards? If it is not slap bang in the middle of the pavements, it is all over any green area. Just because a green space doesn't have a sign saying 'no dogs allowed', does not mean it is a dog toilet for dogs to do it anywhere.
It is completely disgusting. There should be a policy of zero tolerance - these selfish dog owners and their dogs are a blight on the beautiful Islington landscape.

Dog mess is a really unpleasant problem and we’re sorry it spoils your enjoyment when you’re out and about in Islington. We do impose fines on people who allow their dogs to do this, and in the past 12 months, we’ve issued 112 fixed penalty notices – 49 for dog fouling offences, 64 to people who allowed their dogs into dog exclusion areas, and nine to dog owners who failed to put and keep their dog on a lead when they were asked to. The fixed penalty fines are £80 each, and anyone who doesn’t pay can be prosecuted. As a result, four people have been taken to the Magistrates Court, and all four were successfully prosecuted with fines up to £175 plus imposed costs. We also give informal warnings to hundred of dog owners to encourage them to clean up their act. Despite all this work, we know that the problem still exists, which is why we have a stringent street cleaning programme. Residential streets are cleaned frequently, and last year we introduced the Poover – a motorbike specially modified to include a water and suction kit to clean the streets of dog mess. A fragrant detergent sterilises the street at the same time as cleaning it. We will continue to speak to dog owners and attempt to educate them, issuing fines and warnings when necessary. A reminder to customers and residents that that we are hoping for a final decision on our exciting proposals to improve Ironmonger Row Baths towards the end of February. If we are given the go ahead, then we will be arranging to move the Ironmonger Row Baths gym to the first floor of Finsbury Leisure Centre over Easter and will then be closing the building in May 2010. We apologise in advance for any disruption during this time – though we’re sure the refurbishment will be worth the wait! Click below for details of alternative Islington-run facilities and updates on the project in the leisure centre.
There is still time to take part in our noise survey! We want to know which noises you identify with Islington – which are your favourites and those you really don't like. We also want to know where you go to find peace and quiet in the borough – do you visit a park or take solace in your home? We’ll use the survey results to plan work to tackle noise and to map noisy and quiet areas. Simply click below to have your say!

We’re lucky here in Islington to have such a wonderful diversity of food. With countless restaurants and cafés serving up cuisines from all corners of the globe, as well as around 2,000 food and drink businesses and plenty of street markets, there is much for us to celebrate. But of course, the production, preparation and distribution of all this food, along with the consumption and waste, can have a negative impact on our health and the environment. So the council, with NHS Islington and community partners, is launching a borough food strategy which aims to make healthy and sustainable food affordable and accessible to all.
