Goswell Road Island Public Space Improvements

Goswell Road Island Public Space Improvements

Consultation Results

Transport for London (TfL) and Islington Council are working together to develop a new public space at the Goswell Road Island, where Goswell Road meets City Road. Our aim is to transform it into a safer, more comfortable, attractive and accessible place. The details of the scheme are illustrated in the Consultation Leaflet (see the document below).

A public consultation exercise into the proposals was held in March 2007. The results of the consultation have been reported to TfL, and they have decided to amend the scheme. The Summary Consultation Report can be downloaded below.

The consultation results and decisions made about the scheme are reported below.

The Consultation Programme

3,859 consultation leaflets were distributed to local properties, stakeholders and local venues. This included 3,500 which were delivered to properties within a 400m radius of the site by letter-box drop. The balance was distributed to members of the public requesting additional copies, additional stakeholders and local venues.

The staffed public exhibition was held at the Candid Arts Centre in Torrens Street, about 40 metres from City Road and the Goswell Road Island, on Thursday 8 March 2007 (3pm - 8pm) and Saturday 10 March 2007 (10am - 4pm). Copies of the leaflet were also made available at the exhibition.

Publicity for the consultation included:

  • ·Publicity on London Borough of Islington website (www.islington.gov.uk) and the Angel Town Centre’s website (www.angeltowncentre.com), with links to the consultation leaflet.

  • ·Coverage in the March edition of “IslingtonNow”, the London Borough of Islington newspaper, published immediately prior to the consultation.

  • ·A Cycling Breakfast organised by the London Cycling Campaign (www.lcc.org.uk) on the cycle route on Goswell Road Island on Friday 16 March 2007, where leaflets were handed out to cyclists and pedestrians.

Level of Response

38 people attended the public exhibition (about 95% of all attendees as some visitors did not sign in). 364 questionnaires returns were received. This represents a 9.4% response rate of the 3,859 leaflets distributed.

81% of questionnaires (294) included general comments about the scheme. A further 80 sets of comments or representations were received.
