Archway

The regeneration of the Archway area is a long-held desire of both local residents and Islington Council. In 1998 a planning brief was prepared to stimulate interest in improving the area but to date no major change has been implemented.

In March 2005 the council decided that new planning guidance was needed. The council is now developing a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for Archway. This will provide a framework for the regeneration of the area that takes into account changes in planning policy that affect both London and Islington. This will be an important document. Once the council has adopted the SPD it will guide future decisions on any planning applications for the Archway area.

Before preparing this draft the council carried out a series of consultation events. These were held in November / December 2005 and again in June/ July 2006 and gathered views on any future regeneration of the Archway area. The council considered these findings before it drafted the Archway Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). To find out how we undertook the consultation and the main issues raised download the statement of consultation from the more information link below.

The purpose of the draft SPD is to identify how key principles for the regeneration of Archway could be delivered in built form. The draft SPD sets out:

  • the national, regional and local planning policy for archway

  • the mix of uses, including mix of retail units

  • potential development parcels

  • the maximum height and scale of new development

  • the potential location for a public space (heart space)

  • how pedestrian routes could be improved

  • how improved links to the ‘island’ site could be achieved

  • the potential to retain and enhance the existing community facilities

In addition to the draft SPD we have also produced a sustainability appraisal of the policies it contains.

We have now completed a six week consultation on the draft Archway development framework – Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). This consultation ran from the 15 January 2007 until 23 Febraury 2007.

What Happens Next?

Once we have considered the comments and made amendments to the draft SPD. We will publish the results of the consultation on the website and explain how we have taken these into account.

Background information

The Archway SPD will form part of a set of new planning documents called the Local Development Framework. To find out more about this visit the link under related information.

In addition to the development of the Archway Development Framework the Council is also committed to addressing existing environmental problems through the A1 Borough Strategy.

In tandem with looking at the longer term opportunities at Archway the council will also be developing a set of smaller scale projects around issues such as community safety, lack of greenery, poor quality public spaces, graffiti and anti-social behaviour.
