New allotments will sprout from abandoned Islington car park

Date: 28-Jan-10 by Chris Roe

A derelict car park in Islington is being torn up to create 30 new allotments for green-fingered residents.

Islington Council is transforming the old site off Pollard Close and Quemerford Road, Holloway, as part of its Edible Islington food growing campaign.

Fresh vegetables will be grown in plots fed by rainwater harvested from the site to reduce the need for mains water irrigation.

To make the project even more "green", the old concrete surface is being crushed and reused on the site to build bases for paths.

Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council’s executive member for leisure and equalities, launched the project and said: "This will transform an unused, grey car park into new green spaces for our residents.

"Islington is one of London's smallest boroughs, with a limited amount of room, and this great idea breathes new life into an unused space.

"We know community green spaces like allotments and parks are very important for our residents, and we want to make the most of every piece of land we have."

Residents on the council's allotment waiting list are now being contacted and invited to take on one of the new patches, which are designed to be accessible.

Edible Islington is an ongoing council campaign to encourage community food growing. It has already created 30 new food growing projects in schools and established 60 community food growing sites across the borough.
