Residents are asked about sounds and silence in Islington

Date: 26-Jan-10 by Chris Roe

Hotspots of noise and havens of calm in Islington are being mapped as residents are asked about their favourite - and least favourite - noises.

Islington Council is asking those who live and work in the borough which sounds they find most irritating when out and about, as well as oases where they go to escape the rat race.

Residents are also being asked how noisy their neighbourhood is, and what steps they would like taken to reduce particular environmental noises.

Information from the Islington Noise Survey, which can be completed online or by post, will be used to plan council work to tackle noise, and also to map noisy and quiet areas.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's executive member for environment: "We're asking residents how noise affects their lives, for better or worse, to see how we can help.

"Lives can be blighted by environmental noise and at the same time quiet places, such as parks, where people can escape the hustle and bustle are highly valued.

"This survey will help us plan how to reduce the impact of noise on our residents."

To find out more about this survey or to fill it in online please visit www.islington.gov.uk/noise.

Residents who would prefer to receive a printed copy should contact the council’s Noise Team on 020 7527 3258 or email noise.issues@islington.gov.uk

Surveys can be filled in until the end of April.
