Islington is set to become the first borough in the country to introduce a blanket 20mph zone on all residential roads.
The authority has approved plans to put the limit on all the borough’s backstreets to slash accidents, congestion and pollution.
Major roads including ‘red routes’ operated by TfL will keep their 30mph limit.
Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “We want streets where our kids can walk to school safely, where our cyclists can ride without risk, and where pollution levels are driven down.
“A blanket 20mph zone is a bold step, but it’s what our residents want and deserve. The scheme has had cross-party support and widespread public backing."
Islington Council has already invested in safer walk-to-school routes and new cycle lanes, including dedicated contra-flow bike routes down one-way streets which are popular in many European cities.
No new traffic-calming measures or speed bumps will be installed as part of the plan. Drivers will be notified of the limit with 20mph signs.
