Dozens of service users and carers turned up for Islington's housing options fair for residents with learning disabilities last week (Friday 13 November).
The event - the first of its kind in Islington - showcased the different types of housing and support available to people with learning disabilities.
As part of the government's Valuing People Now agenda, all local authorities are required to meet the individual needs of the learning disabled, including where and with whom they want to live and what they want to do.
Cllr Barbara Smith, Executive Member for Housing and Community Safety opened the fair. She said:
"In Islington, we want to make sure residents with learning disabilities live as independently as possible and are an integral part of the wider community.
"Enabling all residents to express individual choice in how and where they live is key to this.
"So I'm delighted that events like the housing options fair are helping us reach our more vulnerable residents to offer the full range of council services."
A continuous flow of people attended the fair at the Resource Centre on Holloway Road – picking up information, attending the different presentations and asking questions about different housing options, welfare rights and benefits.
Among the exhibitors was disability organisation Keyring who provide support for learning disabled people to live more confidently on their own.
