Praise for Islington nursery where ‘children are cared for extremely well’

Date: 19-Nov-09 by Caroline Horrocks

Margaret McMillan Nursery School in Hornsey has been judged as 'good' by Ofsted and described as 'a good school in which all children develop well and are cared for extremely well.'

Inspectors felt that the range of 'engaging practical activities' provided at the nursery means children make good progress in their learning and development. In fact, most children leave the nursery with higher standards than expected for their age group in all areas of learning.

The physical development of children at Margaret McMillan was praised. The garden is very well used in all weathers, encouraging children to run, cycle and climb. Children have also developed 'extremely positive attitudes to healthy lifestyles through eating regular freshly cooked balanced meals.'

Ofsted commended the 'strong commitment from staff, including dedicated leaders and managers' at the nursery. Head of Margaret McMillan, Mary Ward said:

"We're really pleased with this report from Ofsted. I'd like to thank the children, parents, governors and staff who have contributed so much to the school."

The 'spiritual, moral, social and cultural development' of children at the nursery is excellent and their 'behaviour is outstanding'. The children have 'friendly confident expressions and open manners' which Ofsted felt was a result of how safe they feel and their good relationships with staff.

Islington Council’s executive member for children and young people, Cllr Paula Belford said:

"Margaret McMillan joins several other children's centres in Islington recently praised for the care and education they provide.

"Early years education providers in Islington - along with primary and secondary schools in the borough – are quite rightly being recognised by Ofsted for the excellent start in life they are offering children."

Inspectors were impressed by the way staff at the nursery interact with children. They have created a 'safe environment while encouraging children's independence and curiosity to learn.'

Ofsted concluded that children attending Margaret McMillan 'are all well prepared for later life and learning because of their good progress, high attainment, excellent behaviour and good levels of independence and confidence.'
