Islington’s residents are being praised for their environmental efforts, after the borough bagged three major awards.
Islington Council won the “Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative” prize at the LetsRecycle.com Awards for slashing the amount of waste produced.
The authority also clinched a special prize at the VALPAK Awards for Excellence in Waste Management for “Consistent Commitment to Developing Environmental Awareness & Sustainability”.
The third award was jointly won with the North London Waste Authority for Watch Your Waste Week, which saw volunteers almost halving their waste.
Former Islington MP Chris Smith, now chair of the Environment Agency, gave a keynote speech at the awards. The prizes were presented by Sky News anchor Dermot Murnaghan.
Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, said: “Having a great recycling record is one thing, but of course it’s better not to produce the waste in the first place – and these awards show we’re moving in the right direction.
“Clearly this kind of progress wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of local residents, so we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has played their part in cutting the amount of waste that ends up going into landfill.”
The LetsRecycle.com award recognised the council’s work that led to a nine per cent cut in the amount of waste produced in the borough in 2008-09 compared to the year before.
