Successful Summer University celebrated

Date: 10-Nov-09 by Caroline Horrocks

Islington’s Summer University is celebrating its most successful year yet, with more young people than ever before enrolling on courses earlier this year.

Summer University is a part of Heatwave, organised by Islington Council and its partners to offer children and young people hundreds of low-cost or free activities to take part in over the summer holidays.

All those who attended Summer University courses received certificates at a celebration event held at London Metropolitan University.

This year Islington’s Summer University ran 103 free courses for young people aged 10 to 19, ranging from cooking, to go-kart maintenance. Nearly 800 young people attended at least one course during July and August.

Islington Council’s executive member for children and young people, Cllr Paula Belford said:

"This year, Islington Council and its partners provided it’s biggest ever range of free and affordable activities for children and young people to take part in.

"I went along to visit some of these and was impressed by the enthusiasm of the young people. Many of them had booked onto several different courses.

"Well done to all the young people who got out there this summer and used the activities on offer to meet some new people, learn some new skills and have fun during the holidays."
