Council publishes policies which will shape the future of Islington

Date: 03-Nov-09 by Chris Weeks

Islington Council has published a strategy which will shape the future of the borough, with policies ranging from housing delivery to the vibrancy of our town centres.

The guidelines are set out in a document called the “Core Strategy”, which examines how the land in the borough can be used over the next 15 years.

The strategy was drawn up following a borough-wide consultation in 2008 and further detailed consultation with local community organisations this year.

Proposals are listed under the headings of Heritage and Urban Design, Environmental Sustainability, Housing, Employment, Retail and Open space, play and sport.

There are specific policies for each area of Islington too, with emphasis on making places more ‘pedestrian-friendly’ and attracting the right mix of shops.

One of the top recommendations in the strategy is that half of all new housing should be affordable. In line with the public's feedback, this will include more social housing, as well as more homes for people on middle incomes, such as part-buy, part-rent schemes.

Now the strategy will go through a final consultation to ensure that it is sound and has met legal requirements.

Cllr Terry Stacy, Leader of Islington Council, said: “This document has huge implications for the future for Islington – what it will look like, transport links, employment, and a whole range of things that affect people’s lives.

“That’s why it’s vital that we listen to what people have to say. We’ve already had more than 2,000 responses which have helped to shape the document we have now, to make sure we get this absolutely right.”

Residents can see the document by visiting Islington Council’s website at www.islington.gov.uk, or by calling Contact Islington on 020 7527 2000.

A final consultation runs until 1 December.
