Family of tragic Ben support anti-crime event in Islington

Date: 09-Nov-09 by Chris Roe

The family of murdered teenager Ben Kinsella is supporting an event in Islington that promotes work to tackle crime.

Ben, 16, was stabbed to death in June 2008. His three murderers are each serving a life sentence.

The Kinsella family are among the invited audience for "Transforming neighbourhoods, changing lives" on Thursday 12 November.

The event, organised by Islington Council and sponsored by FM Conway, one of the borough's highways services providers, will promote community safety, and highlight how careful design can make streets, parks, open spaces and estates less vulnerable to criminals.

Local schoolchildren will see an anti-knife-crime play from "The Comedy School" called "It's No Joke", which highlights the dangers of anti-social behaviour.

Afterwards, the Kinsella family will speak about the impact that crime has had on them.

There will be giveaways and information on the work to make Islington safer, including "designing out crime" by looking at the layout of streets and public spaces.

Islington Council and its contractors have completed 15 projects to "design out crime" including recent work in Bunning Way, near where the event is taking place.

A low-lit piece of land with poor lines of sight was attracting anti-social behaviour including muggings, threatening behaviour and drug-dealing.

The area has now been made much less attractive for anti-social behaviour by removing dead trees, adding lighting, improving landscaping and other work.

Cllr Barbara Smith, Islington Council's executive member for community safety, will also be attending the event and said: "Crime and personal safety are top of the list for residents and we're working hard with police to tackle this.

"It's amazing what a difference careful design - getting rid of dark corners, for example - can make to improving areas and people's safety.

"I'm very grateful to Ben Kinsella's family for supporting this event. Their ongoing work to stop knife crime is inspirational."

Michael Conway, managing director of sponsor FM Conway said: "The past two years have seen us work closely with Islington Council on a number of high profile projects, including the redevelopment of problem areas around Bunning Way.

"As a company, we’re proud to say that we’ve played a part in helping to combat crime levels in the area."

The event is open to the public, although space is limited. It will take place at Nailour Hall Community Centre, 52 Blundell Street, N7 9DD, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm on Thursday 12 November.
