Islington Council signs up to 10:10 fight against climate change

Date: 02-Sep-09 by Chris Roe

Islington Council has joined dozens of organisations and public figures in pledging support for the new national 10:10 campaign against global warming.

The council is one of the first local authorities in the UK to sign up to 10:10, which commits it to strive to cut its carbon footprint by 10 per cent during 2010.

Public figures supporting 10:10 range from climate change expert Lord Stern to TV chef Delia Smith and designer Vivienne Westwood.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "We're proud to be one of the 10 local authorities involved in the launch of this important stand against climate change.

"Ten per cent is a very tough target but we're determined to do all we can to reach it on behalf of our residents.

"I'd invite residents to sign up to this too - we can all work together to help tackle climate change."

The launch took place at Tate Modern on Tuesday (September 1).

Islington Council has already taken pioneering action to cut its share of carbon emissions.

Measures so far include the UK's largest solar hot water installation on a swimming pool (at Highbury Fields), installation of low-energy lighting and draught-proofing of libraries.

Also, all primary schools roofs in Islington are being insulated in time for this winter to cut carbon emissions and also fuel bills.

In June the council was awarded the Energy Efficiency Achievement of the Year prize at the 2009 MJ Achievement Awards.
