Islington Council

Caribbean Carnival Capers

Date: 20-Aug-09 by Charles Dean

Over 40 day centre users were treated to a tropical-themed tea dance this week - a week in advance of the Notting Hill Carnival.

Highbury New Park Day Centre, N5, provides music, art and craft activities and a hot lunch to Islington OAPs - many of whom came to the UK from different parts of the world, including the Caribbean.

Cllr Terry Stacy, Leader of Islington Council, who visited the centre this week to see preparations for the tea dance said:

"Service users love Islington's Day Centres, especially Highbury New Park. With a warm reception, an activities programme bursting with new ideas and the very best care staff, it's easy to see why."

On Tuesday 18 August, The Whittington Steel Band provided a calypso-themed musical backdrop to the afternoon's celebration of all things Caribbean, while kitchen staff served up a hearty Caribbean-inspired menu including curry patties, rice and peas, spicy ginger cake and tropical fruit punch.

Islington's day centres celebrate the ethnic diversity of the borough with special activities for a number of different holidays and festivals each year, including Greek Orthodox New Year at Alsen Day Centre and Burns Night at Highbury New Park.

A further Caribbean Festival will take place at Alsen Day Centre, in N4 on Friday 20 August.
