Islington Council

New signs the ‘talk’ of the town

Innovative ‘talking’ devices, newly installed at a number of Islington parks, will offer a friendly and informative welcome to residents and visitors.

Islington Council is the first to introduce the technology to green spaces, fitted as part of the New Parks’ Signature Scheme.

More than 300 new signs will be installed in 115 Islington open spaces by the end of next month with six parks to boast the audio device.

Friends of Elthorne Park secretary, Arabella Weir, said: “These new, easy to read, informative signs are absolutely great.

“They set the park's stall out from the entrance as a bright, friendly, clean and accessible space for all.

“The new signs form part of the new-look Elthorne Park – a wonderful, well maintained and valued local greenspace.”

The new signs, located at entrances and other key locations, provide interesting information, directions and details of environmental features.

The audio device, which is in its pilot stage, is durable, cost effective and low maintenance.

Because the sound is generated by winding a handle, the technology is also environmentally friendly.

Each device plays two three-minute messages – one tailored for adults and one for children.

Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: “Islington is home to a number of wonderful parks and green spaces and these new signs make them even more special. As well as our well known parks we have some hidden gems that these signs will help to highlight.

“The audio signs were voiced by Taggart actor John Michie and students from Highbury Fields Girl's School who've done a brilliant job of making each sign come to life.”

The New Parks’ Signature Scheme was launched at Fortune Street Park last week (Tuesday 11 August).

Cllr Polling and Islington Mayor Anna Berent were among the special guests.
