Islington Pedals Onto Leader Board in Cycle Challenge

Date: 10-Aug-09 by Charles Dean

Islington Council workers showed their mettle by cycling into the top ten in Transport for London's (TfL's) Workplace Cycle Challenge 2009.

200 Islington Council cyclists clocked up an outstanding 22,606 miles between them in June. The distance is equivalent to 96 journeys from London to Paris, a return journey from London to Auckland or nearly once around the world.

Islington's two-wheeled enthusiasts beat 23 other councils in the commuter competition and came hard on the heels of the Tower Hamlets council team.

Over 230 teams took part in the month-long challenge which was won by a team from BSkyB.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said:

"To finish in the top ten is a great result and shows how strongly council workers took up the challenge here in Islington.

"Making your daily trips by bike not only keeps you fit but reduces the traffic and pollution caused by car journeys.

"We'll continue to support cycling in Islington and ahead of the Mayor's cycle hire scheme next year which will see many more bikes on the borough's streets."

Collectively, the TfL's London Workplace Cycle Challenge cyclists covered over 948,689 miles during June - the equivalent of riding to the moon and back twice or 38 times round the world.
