Loving Islington's Parks

Date: 04-Aug-09 by Caroline Horrocks

Outdoor games, picnics, garden festivals and guided walks are just some of the activities enjoyed by local residents in Islington’s parks during Love Your Parks week.

The annual campaign encourages boroughs around the country to celebrate all that is special about their parks, and a host of events have been taking place in Islington.

At a fun day in Whittington Park, visitors were treated to a Turkish dance performance by a local community group and entertained by a dog show. Children enjoyed face painting and scaled new heights on a rock climbing wall which was installed for the day.

Cllr Ruth Polling, Executive Member for Leisure said:

"National Love Your Parks Week gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate all that our parks have to offer. From wild flower meadows, outdoor gyms and fantastic gardens to new sports pitches and trees, there really is something for everyone.

"We know local residents love their parks and over the past few years the Council has been doing its bit to love parks too, with millions of pounds being invested in making them even better.

"The events like the one I attended at Whittington Park are free and provide the perfect excuse to get outdoors and enjoy the summer – even if the weather might not be playing its part!"

An officer from the RSPB also came along to the Whittington Park fun day to see how the wild flower garden is developing. It's hoped the garden will produce more seeds and attract insects, which will in turn provide food for the declining house sparrow population.

Run between 25 July and 2 August, Love Your Parks Week in Islington also included a guided walk around Bunhill Fields, an afternoon of outdoor activities in Rosemary Gardens, a community summer festival at Joseph Grimaldi Park and a teddy bears picnic in Elthorne Park.
