Islington Council

Climate Change Fund to continue the fight

Islington Council has committed an additional £1 million to its award-winning Climate Change Fund.

The cash, which adds to the initial £3 million, will help the council provide more householders with grants for installing renewable energy systems, such as solar hot water and photovoltaic panels, in their homes.

Set up in 2007, the Climate Change Fund (CCF) supports, funds and enables green energy and transport projects that reduce the borough’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “The Climate Change Fund has been one of Islington Council’s many successful initiatives aimed at combating climate change.

“The additional money is fantastic news.

“Not only will more residents benefit from the financial savings, but everyone will benefit from a greener borough.”

About half the £1 million windfall will go to householders with the other half to benefit social housing residents.

Voluntary organisations can still apply for money which remains in the original pot.

The news comes as Islington claimed the Energy Efficiency Achievement of the Year prize at the 2009 MJ Achievement Awards – a success influenced by the CCF.

The first initiative of its kind in the country, the CCF has already helped fund more than 50 council and community projects and the installation of almost 100 domestic solar energy systems.

This will save an estimated £30,000 from fuel bills each year and cut the borough’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 500 tonnes – roughly equal to the emissions from over 100 Islington homes.
