Miserable weather couldn’t keep the crowd away from Islington Council’s Go Green event in Rosemary Gardens.

Hundreds of people braved the rain to help celebrate the gardens’ makeover which included new planting, seating and resurfaced paths as well as a redesigned play area.

The £340,000 project comprised £160,000 from Islington Council, £120,000 from planning contributions from developers, and £60,000 from the government's Playbuilder fund.

The overhaul has already been well received with 85 per cent of people surveyed agreeing the improvements made the area a better place to live, work and visit.

Cllr Ruth Polling, Executive Member for Leisure, said: "People always tell us how much they enjoy the precious green space in Islington. That's why the council is spending nearly £7million on improving Islington's parks and open spaces.

“These latest improvements at Rosemary Gardens have made it a more inviting, pleasant space and complement the new football and hockey pitches and resurfaced tennis and basketball courts funded by Arsenal FC and Barclay's Bank.

“It’s great to know so many people are happy with the changes and I'm sure even more residents and visitors will now want to spend time in the park.”

The fun programme of entertainment and activities included a panna (modified)football tournament, the Whittington steel band, DJ workshops, games and face painting with the Islington Playrangers and money and energy-saving advice and gadgets courtesy of Doctor Energy.
