Mayor Hosts Armed Forces Day Event

Date: 22-Jun-09 by Charles Dean

Islington's Mayor, 82-year-old Anna Berent, joined standard bearers from The Islington Veterans' Association in a special ceremony at Islington Town Hall today (Monday 22 June) to mark Armed Forces Day (27 June).

A brand new standard was raised on the roof at 10.30am. At the same moment, an assembled party of veterans flanked by Cllr Anna Berent and Council Leader Terry Stacy raised their own standards on the Town Hall steps.

Parish Priest Father Jim Kennedy of Blessed Sacrament Church attended along with a dozen ex-service personnel.

Cllr Terry Stacy, Leader Islington Council, said:

"Islington has a strong tradition of remembrance; events like today's help future generations appreciate the sacrifice made by yesterday's men and woman in the armed forces.

"Today we fly the standard to mark Armed Forces Day and will continue to do so on this day in future."

Islington's flag will fly all week and is part of a co-ordinated and planned remembrance event policy across the borough. In 2006, Islington Council spruced up Islington Green with a strikingly designed war memorial, flagpole and event area.

In April, the Town Hall played host to a medal presentation for a dozen Land Army Girls now in their 80s and 90s who had left the city to spend the war in the British countryside ploughing fields, harvesting crops and felling trees for the war effort.
