Islington Council

Town Hall takes a step back in time

A splash of colour has seen a drab hoarding in Islington transform into a nostalgic vision – and a novel way of promoting local traders.

The hoarding protecting the entrance to the council’s flagship Assembly Hall renovation project has been revived with 1920s-style images and a brief history of the art deco grade II listed venue and its famous past performers.

The makeover has attracted passers-by keen to learn a little about the hall’s postwar heyday or perhaps relive the experience.

Cllr John Gilbert, Executive Member for Finance, said: “Our Assembly Hall renovations are on target to be completed in December but we saw an opportunity to promote community spirit in the meantime.

“The new look not only offers a glimpse of days gone by, it also adds to the excitement surrounding the future of Assembly Hall.”

Since the changes, the 30ft hoarding also doubles as a signpost for the nearby London Farmers’ Market.

The market, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, will now benefit from hoarding artwork directing residents to the traders’ fresh, delicious produce around the corner.

Market director Cheryl Cohen said: “I'm delighted Islington Council is using their Town Hall hoarding so imaginatively.

“I hope the sign will help more people discover how wonderful it is to shop at the Farmers' Market.”

For one day only, the markets will expand to the recently-transformed Town Hall forecourt for a colourful plant sale on Sunday 14 June.
