Islington Council

Have your say on the future of Bunhill and Clerkenwell

Date: 05-Jun-09 by Caroline Horrocks

Islington residents, organisations and businesses are being asked to have their say on how the areas around Bunhill and Clerkenwell are developed over the next 15 years.

Major changes are on the way for both wards, and Islington Council and EC1 New Deal for Communities want to find out how local people think the areas should be developed as a result.

By 2017, Farringdon Station will be the only place in London served by both the Crossrail and Thameslink networks. This will mean a huge increase in commuters to the area and is also likely to drive residential and employment growth in the vicinity.

Councillor Lucy Watt, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Communities, Skills and Business said:

“I know local people have strong views about the future of Bunhill and Clerkenwell. These areas are unique parts of Islington because of being situated so close to the City, and the pressure for development is always very high.

"The Bunhill and Clerkenwell Area Action Plan will give us real powers to control much of this change through the planning system. This is why we want to hear the views of local people on issues ranging from new housing and workspace, tall buildings and the future character of their neighbourhoods."

A consultation and more information can be found at www.islington.gov.uk/bunhillclerkenwell. A number of evening workshops will also be held between 15 June and 3 July.

Amongst other questions, local residents, organisations and businesses are being asked:

· Where and how should new housing be provided?
· Where should we improve or create new public open space?
· In which locations - if any - should new, well-designed tall buildings be considered?
· What improvements to community facilities, open space and public transport might be needed to support the additional people coming to the area?

The feedback will be used as the first stage in creating a 15-year Area Action Plan for Bunhill and Clerkenwell.

The consultation period ends on 13 July. The online survey can be found at www.islington.gov.uk/bunhillclerkenwell and a questionnaire is also being distributed to all households in Bunhill and Clerkenwell. A series of evening workshops will be held from 6.30-8.30pm at the following locations:

15 June, St Luke’s Centre, 90 Central Street, EC1V 8AJ
22 June, Finsbury Library, 245 St John Street, EC1V 4NB
29 June, Alan Baxter & Associates, 75 Cowcross Street, EC1M 6EL
3 July, Golden Lane Campus, 101 Whitecross Street, EC1Y 8JA
