£1,000 helps give Islington's Georgie a fighting chance

Date: 24-Apr-09 by Chris Roe

A YOUNG boxer from Islington has been given £1,000 towards new gloves, equipment and competition travel expenses thanks to Sport Islington - Islington's voluntary sports network.

Georgie Kean, 17 - who boxes at light welterweight at national level and has won his last 14 fights - has hopes for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

On top of his job, he trains six days a week, boxes at Times Amateur Boxing Club in York Way and uses Islington Council's Market Road fitness centre.

Now he's been given a £1,000 helping hand from Sport Islington, which is funded by Islington Council, and SportsAid, a national charity that supports talented young athletes.

The money will be spent on boxing gloves, headguards, bandages, trainers for running, and travel expenses.

Georgie already holds two national titles - junior novice at lightweight and senior novice at light welterweight.

He said: "Short-term I want to win the junior ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) title. Long-term I want to box for England at next year’s Commonwealth Games, and represent and win for the UK at the London 2012 Olympic Games."

Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: "We're committed to helping and encouraging Islington's young people to follow their ambitions.

"Georgie knows what he wants to achieve and his hard work and talent have already brought him success. I hope the £1,000 helps and wish him the best of luck for his future fights."
