Islington’s young readers win big prizes

Date: 02-Apr-09 by Chris Roe

Three of Islington’s young people have picked up big prizes for reading hundreds of books from Islington Council's Libraries.

Tommy Lam (8), Abdul Halim (13) and Stacey Duah (12), all took part in the Big Reading League, Islington Libraries’ reading initiative for children as part of 2008’s National Year of Reading - and between them borrowed an amazing 416 books.

Their names came out of the hat to win a family ticket to Thorpe Park, a family ticket for a tour of Wembley Stadium and a digital camera respectively.

They were presented with their prizes and special certificates by Islington’s Mayor, Cllr Stefan Kasprzyk, in his parlour at the Town Hall on Monday (30th March).

Children won points in the Big Reading League for reading books, with bonus points added on for book reviews, drawings and for parents who read during the year too.

Of the 574 children aged 5-15 who took part, 115 read 10 or more books and so were eligible for the big prize draw. 6 children at each of Islington’s 10 libraries also won smaller prizes.

Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: "This brilliant football-style league from our libraries team appealed to many children, including those who might not otherwise have been interested in reading.

"Well done to all the young people who took part, especially our three winners. I hope that taking part in the league has been just the start of a lifetime of enjoying books for everyone who took part.

"National Year of Reading may have finished but there's no reason to stop reading - our libraries are bursting with books to borrow for free."
