Islington Council

Global experts turn to Islington for advice on green energy

Islington Council’s wind turbines are attracting international interest.

A delegation from the Asian sub-continent recently inspected the authority's flagship turbine, on the roof of the municipal offices in Upper Street, with a view to installing similar technology in Pakistan - where electricity is often in short supply.

And a team of experts from the USA viewed the borough's solar panels to learn more about the council's role in providing green energy and tackling fuel poverty, as part of their fact-finding mission.

Marilou Cheple, from the Office of Energy Security in Minnesota State, said during the visit to north London: "It's really interesting to see solar panels used in an urban environment. Minnesota is cold but sunny in winter, so looking at the different approaches to energy saving is a great learning experience."

A council spokesperson said: “We’re proud of our turbines and solar panels across Islington, paid for through our pioneering Climate Change Fund, so we open the door to anyone who wants to learn more about generating clean energy for themselves."

The delegation from Pakistan is working on a project to introduce wind turbines in Karachi, in the south of the country, to boost production at factories where power cuts are frequent.

Islington Council's turbine, on top of 222 Upper Street, provides power for the municipal offices.
