Pensioners take their partners at Valentines Ball

Date: 17-Feb-09 by Charles Dean

Over 30 pensioners joined an Elvis tribute artist and live band at Alsen Day Centre for a Valentine's Day Ball on 13 February.

The Day Centre in Durham Road, N4, provides a hot lunch and social activities for up to 40 people each weekday.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care joined young volunteers from the local community helping older people 'trip the light fantastic' to a selection of romantic ballads from the golden age of dancehall. She said:

"Alsen's Valentines Ball shows you are never too old to have fun - and almost never too old to dance!

"Connecting with other people is a great way to beat loneliness and stay in good health - I'm proud that the Council is able to get so many older people involved in special celebrations like this.

"We've had great feedback from those who attended and a lot more ideas for more engaging - and unusual - activities in future."
