Christmas trees recycled

Date: 05-Feb-09 by Chris Weeks

40 tonnes of Christmas trees have been recycled from households across Islington – the equivalent weight of a Boeing 737.

The evergreens, collected from doorsteps by Islington Council after the festive period, are being composted at a special facility in East London.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “This is 40 tonnes of green waste that has been turned into useful compost instead of rotting in a landfill, giving off dangerous greenhouse gases.”
