A text number making it easier for young people to access help and advice has been launched by Islington Council’s drug and alcohol service.
Young people aged between eight and 18 who are using drugs, alcohol or solvents or who are affected by a friend or family member using them, can text ‘drugs’ followed by their name to 60777. They will then be called by a member of The Annexe - Islington's drug and alcohol service - within one working day, who can offer them confidential information and support. In the last year the service has given support to around 300 young people, offering group and one-to-one sessions as well as family counselling.
Islington Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Paula Belford said: “This is an excellent service and gives any young person who lives or studies in Islington an easy way to get help. It's important that they should be able to speak to someone in confidence and without being judged. This isn't just for people who are using drugs or alcohol, but for any young person who might be struggling to cope with how substance misuse is affecting someone close to them."
Young people can still also call the existing service number on 020 7527 5099. Text messages to the service are charged at the standard network rate.
