Islington Council

Got an idea for a youth project? Get some money for it!

Date: 08-Jan-09 by Caroline Horrocks

Islington Council is giving young people in the borough the chance to apply for a slice of well over £60,000 to spend on a project of their choice.

Islington’s Youth Opportunities Fund is available to help young people make their own educational projects happen and decide how money should be spent on positive activities in their area. This could be of any format, from a one-off musical event, or a two-week arts project, to a science project lasting six months. The only restrictions are that applications must be made by young people aged 13-19 who are living or studying in Islington and must be of benefit to as many young people as possible.

Islington Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Paula Belford said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for all those young people in the borough who have some really exciting ideas about projects that can benefit the local community. I would really encourage as many as possible to apply for funding. This money is there for them to take advantage of and they can be really creative with it, managing the whole project from start to finish.”

Islington projects that have benefited from the Youth Opportunities Fund in the past include the restoration and replanting of youth club gardens and trip to Centre Parcs for a group of young disabled people who needed one to one care.

A youth panel of 13 - 20 year-olds supported by Islington’s youth service’s Listen Up team will make the decisions on which projects will receive funding next month. Money will be awarded to projects based on their value for money and benefit they provide for young people in the area. In this funding round, the closing date for applications is Monday 9th February. Those who miss this deadline will have another opportunity to apply later this year.

Any individual or youth group wishing to apply, find out more details or get some advice on their application should contact Rita Burrows or Anna Spivack on 0207 527 4520 / 4511rita.burrows@islington.gov.uk or anna.spivack@islington.gov.uk
