Night-time football matches in Market Road are getting greener, thanks to a new wind turbine which helps power floodlights on the pitch.

The electricity generator, funded by Islington Council's Climate Change Fund, also provides power for the changing room block at the grounds, in N7.

It is Islington's fourth wind turbine; the others are on the council's Municipal Offices building in Upper Street, N1; the Ecology Centre in Drayton Park, N5; and at Kestrel House in City Road, EC1.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "This is the latest addition to our fleet of wind turbines which are generating green energy around the clock.

"This is exactly what our Climate Change Project was set up for. I'm also delighted to see far more solar panels going on schools and homes around the borough."

The turbine was part-funded by the council's £3million Climate Change Fund which dishes out green grants to the community to help slash CO2 emissions.

It generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of two to three homes.

Islington Council's 'Climate Change Fund' will save an estimated 400 tonnes CO2 per year - the equivalent of the annual emissions of nearly 100 Islington homes.

ENDS

For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
