Anyone thinking about adoption can discover the rewards of becoming an adoptive parent and help ensure children find the right loving homes as quickly as possible, at an adoption open evening on Thursday 13th November.

The North London Adoption Consortium (NLAC) is holding its third annual open evening during National Adoption Week (10-16 November) following last year's successful event. The aim is to dispel some of the myths around adoption, especially around who can adopt.

Comments from prospective adopters who attended last year's event include: "It was really enlightening and very moving to hear from people who had adopted already and from people who had been adopted themselves" and "this has opened the door which I thought was closed."

Anyone who wants to find out more about adoption is invited to come along to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham Green on Thursday, 13 November from 6 to 9pm to hear first-hand about how the adoption process works, what kind of financial support is available and why children need adopting. More information can be found at www.adoptionnorthlondon.org

Currently there are over 100 children in north London who need a loving adoptive home. These children come from a range of ethnic and religious backgrounds and many of them need to be placed with their brothers and sisters. To meet these children's needs the NLAC is looking for prospective adopters from all parts of the community, including those who might think they wouldn't be considered. Adopters can be childless couples, couples who already have children, single people with or without children, people over 40, and lesbians and gay men.

Beverley, who has adopted with Islington's adoption services, said:

"I would encourage anyone who is thinking about adoption to just go for it. It's a tough process, but well worth it. Adopting my son is the best thing I've ever done, he's such a lovely little boy."

There will be presentations on the night by childcare professionals and adoptive parents and the opportunity for prospective adopters to have an informal chat to find out if adoption could be the right choice for them.

Councillor Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People said:

"Adopting makes a really positive change to a child's life. Anyone who might be interested in adoption or who just wants to find out a bit more should come along to this event. We need people from all backgrounds, and particularly from black, minority and ethnic communities to offer a good home to one of the many children who are waiting."

The Bernie Grant Arts Centre is located on Town Hall Approach, Tottenham Green, London.
