Islington boxing club is given £4,000 of funding

A POPULAR Islington boxing club has been given £4,000 of funding to help its work with young people in the borough.<br>The Times Amateur Boxing Club, founded in 1927, has worked with thousands of young people over the years, both with boxing and football. <br>It has now been handed £4,000 from the West Area Magpi panel, which is run by Islington Council's Community Safety Partnerships Unit, with representatives from the council, police and other agencies.<br>The money will be used to pay for new equipment, travel costs and football league entry fees and will be targeted at young people thought to be at risk of becoming involved in gang-related activity.<br>Cllr Terry Stacy, Islington Council's Executive Member for Community Safety, said: "The Times ABC has a great record and we're delighted to award this funding.<br>"We're serious about giving young people an alternative to crime or anti-social behaviour and I'm sure this money will help the club to make a real difference."<br>Brian Deegan, Times ABC Treasurer, said: "We are delighted to renew our relationship with MAGPI and help tackle gang problems in Islington. <br>"The club is committed to engaging young people in our activities and diverting them away from gang, drug and alcohol related crime. <br>"We are in full support of both Islington council's and the local community police officers' efforts."
