Date: 30-Sep-08 by Chris Weeks

Fashion seekers can stay chic during the credit crunch, thanks to a new clothes-swapping scheme from Islington Council.

Only decent quality items are allowed at the "Ditch'n'Switch" fashion-swapping party, hosted on Wednesday October 8 at the council's Green Living Centre in Upper Street, N1.

It's hot on the heels of an American craze called "swishing" – where fashion-lovers exchange unwanted items at parties.

Organiser Jean Hughes, from Islington Council, said: "This craze has taken the US by storm and we're expecting it to be popular here in our borough as well.

"You can pick up some nearly-new decent clothes which other people would want to wear, rather than tired old clothes.

"I'm sure many people's wardrobes have chic items they've hardly worn, or grown out of, which can be swapped."

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "This is the latest example of how we're doing all we can to cut waste and help our residents during the credit crunch."

To enter the Ditch'n'Switch event, people must bring between one and five items of clean, decent quality clothes that someone else would want to take home. Any unswapped items will be donated to charity.

There's also music and a glass of wine at the evening, from 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday October 8 at the council's Green Living Centre, 222 Upper Street, Islington N1 1XR

For more information call Jean Hughes on 0207 527 5157 or email jean.hughes@islington.gov.uk

ENDS

For more information on this press release please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
