Sales of council-subsidised composters have rocketed in Islington this summer, new figures reveal. <br><br>Green-fingered residents bought almost as many units in six months as were sold in the whole of last year. <br><br>Sales of wormeries are also going through the roof. <br><br>Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "Composting reduces greenhouse gases, so this is great news.<br><br>"I'm in the process of getting a wormery myself - which the kids seem particularly interested in.<br><br>"It just goes to show how our residents are pulling out all the stops to recycle more, as we work together to become the most environmentally-friendly borough in London." <br><br>125 composters and 91 wormeries were snapped up by householders from April to August this year. <br><br>Composters work by rotting organic material such as weeds and food waste. Wormeries use live worms which eat and digest up to half their own body weight each day to produce high-quality compost. <br><br>Islington Council sells discounted compost bins from just £10, including delivery.
