Inquisitive householders can watch a series of new web videos showing where their recycling ends up.

The short films show how items are sorted after collection and how their organic waste is turned into compost – along with information on what residents should put in their containers.

The footage was made in response to many requests for information.

Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "Residents often ask what happens to our recycling -- and these videos show exactly that.

"I want to thank all our residents who make the day-to-day effort to stop their waste going into landfill, and promise we'll do everything we can to support them."

The films show how items are sent to a "materials recovery facility" where they are placed in a huge spinning drum. Small objects like bottles and cans drop through holes, leaving behind mostly paper and card.

Recycling also moves along a series of conveyor belts, where magnets are used to separate steel cans from aluminium cans and high pressure jets of air separate plastic bottles.

Islington's latest recycling rate is 29%, representing a continual improvement over the last 5 years.

To watch the videos visit www.islington.gov.uk, type "recycling videos" in the search bar and click on the link "What happens to your recycling?"

ENDS

For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
