SUPERSIZED sunflowers and rampant runner beans battled it out as Islington Council's Green Living Centre hosted its first Mini Horticultural Show.<br>More than 60 people packed out the centre with beautiful plants and vegetables hoping to scoop one of the many prizes on offer.<br>The event, run together with the Islington Organic Gardeners Forum, promoted gardening and organic principles to people who live and work in the borough. <br>It also encouraged the use of different spaces for growing, from gardens to balconies and communal green spaces and encouraged people to enjoy and get involved with the many excellent Islington community gardens, groups and initiatives.<br>Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "Growing fruit, veg and flowers is good for your pocket and also the environment, so it's something the council strongly supports.<br>"I was very pleased to see so many people came to this event - it just shows that you don't need lots of space to do some really impressive gardening."<br>The contest had 34 entries in all, and approximately 71 people contributing to growing something. 60 people attended the evening on September 18.<br>The Islington Organic Gardeners Forum meets once a month at the Green Living Centre to share gardening tips and advice. <br>For further info, contact call Kerry Kirwan on 020 75276726 or email greenliving@islington.gov.uk<br><br>
