Date: 19-Sep-08 by Chris Roe

A SHOPKEEPER who dumped rubbish in an Islington street has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 in court fines and costs.
Reza Gholam Aghaty, who trades as Rayshack at 34 Chapel Market, was given a leaflet in March 2005 reminding him that business waste needs to be put in white sacks for collection and not left in the road.
But since then rubbish has been repeatedly left in the street despite advice and warnings from Islington Council.
On January 11 2008 he was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for leaving cardboard boxes in the street outside his shop, which was not paid, which led to prosecution.
On September 16 Highbury Corner magistrates found him guilty of breaking the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and given a fine of £300. Mr Aghaty was fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £750 and a surcharge of £15.
Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Islington Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "We don't like to take local businesses to court, but this was an extreme case.
"Despite help and advice rubbish was left in the street. We work hard to keep our streets clean, a fact which is very important to residents, and will take firm action when needed.
"We're always happy to answer questions and explain how rubbish collection works."
To find out more about business rubbish collections in Islington call Contact Islington on 020 7527 2000.
