Car Free Day brings Big Screen to the Streets of Angel

Islington's celebrations for Car-Free Day feature the glamour of the big screen this year with hundreds expected to flock to Liverpool Road, N1, as it gets a cool make-over, temporarily transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly, open-air cinema.<br><br>Car-Free Day (Saturday 20 September) - now in it's 4th year in Islington - imagines how the streets might look if we all reduced our dependence on cars. <br><br>Across the capital, 12 boroughs are taking part in the fun day with street parties, market stalls and advice on making your journey to work or school more sustainable. Globally, over 2,000 cities are involved.<br><br>Cllr Greg Foxsmith, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said:<br><br>"Our Car-Free Event is a great idea and we hope residents and businesses will back it too.<br><br>"It's going to be a fun family day out and a rare chance to experience our busiest town centre - without cars.<br><br>"In Islington we're very committed to green travel every day of the year - whether that's improving cycle paths, installing bike racks or improving pavements for pedestrians."<br><br>'The Screen on the Street' sees Islington Council turn Liverpool Road into a 'park' for the day with grass and deck chairs so residents can watch great films like 'Cinema Paradiso' and 'Howl's Moving Castle' in the fresh air.<br><br>The FREE outdoor cinema will be on the southern end of Liverpool Road, which will be closed from Upper Street to Tolpuddle Street on the day. <br><br>ENDS<br><br>Note: Islington Council is currently consulting local residents and businesses on holding the Car-Free Day at Angel.<br><br>Previous Car-Free Day events have brought to visitors to Whitecross Street Market and Cowcross Street.<br>
