Islington Council is calling on young people and their parents and carers to help decide how over £1.5 million funding for youth services should be spent in their local area.

Young people will be contacted over the phone and in person and will carry out their own research amongst their peers. They will discuss a range of topics, including the type of activities they would like to have access to – whether they need additional facilities for enjoying arts, sports and music, or whether they would prefer to see something completely different provided.

As part of the consultation, young people at the White Lion Centre and in Hornsey are making films about things they enjoy doing and would like to see developed in their areas. The films will be used as a way of encouraging young people to discuss what's important to them in terms of youth provision.

Parents and carers can also get involved, by completing an online questionnaire which aims to gather their views on how the council and its partners can give young people greater access to a wide range of positive, safe and fun activities.

Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People said:

"I hope as many people as possible respond to this consultation and tell us what they think. Islington Council works very hard to provide good youth facilities across the borough, but we're constantly aiming to improve them and it is important to us to hear what people actually feel they want and need. I'm looking forward to seeing the results that will enable us to make changes that will make a real difference to young people in Islington."

Over the last 18 months Islington Council has carried out a range of research and more than 3,500 young people, residents and professionals have been asked to give their opinions about youth facilities available in Islington. After listening to the feedback, the council is now focussing on three areas of the borough – Hornsey and Finsbury Park, Holloway and Archway and Caledonian and Barnsbury. During the next three years, funding will be allocated to these areas for various projects, which will be decided upon based on the responses to the consultation.

Anyone who would like to have their say can fill out the questionnaire by visiting http://www.islington.gov.uk/Council/CouncilNews/Consultation/feedbackfinder2/consultations/2008/youth_centres.asp.

The consultation period ends on 12 September 2008.
