Islington Council

Time for play in Islington

Date: 17-Jul-08 by Caroline Horrocks

Islington Council is to receive over £1m to spend on play areas in the borough.

The money will be provided over three years by the Government and will be spent on developing new play spaces and rebuilding existing ones. A minimum of six areas will be developed by the end of 2009 and at least 20 by the end of the three-year period.

Councillor Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People said:

"This is great news for Islington families. Good quality public space is important for all of us, but most of all for young people and children. There are good play spaces in Islington but some of them could really do with improving. We'll be able to spend this money on public parks and estates across the borough to put in new games areas and playgrounds and upgrade old ones."

The council will be talking to children, young people and families in the borough to find out which play areas they think are most in need of improvement and what kind of equipment they would like to see being provided.

The new funding comes as Islington Council gets ready to launch their play ranger service. The rangers will travel across the borough to open spaces on estates and in parks, offering supervised play and organised activities on weekends, evenings and during holidays.

ENDS.
