Heatwave hits Islington

Date: 14-Jul-08 by Caroline Horrocks

Children and young people in Islington can look forward to a fun-packed summer holiday this year as Islington Council lays on Heatwave - its most extensive programme of activities ever.

Over 300 courses and events have been organised by the council and its partners to run between July and August. Details for each of them have been published in easy to use booklets. These range from events in parks, activities in leisure centres, a summer university full of interesting programmes, library fun days and holiday care placements.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People said: "I'm really proud that Islington is able to provide such a fantastic range of activities this summer - most of them either subsidised and low cost or free. The information in Heatwave is easy to access and I hope as many children, young people and parents as possible take advantage of what's on offer. The free swimming lessons (amongst other things) available at pools across the borough are getting booked up fast and I would urge people to sign up quickly!"

Activities have been divided into two separate booklets – 0-11 year-olds and 12-19 year-olds. Younger children might enjoy silly sports with Bert the clown, parachute making, learning to snorkel or discovering where food comes from at Islington's animal farm. All the courses and activities vary in length and many encourage parents and siblings to get involved.

For teenagers, there's also something to suit everyone from a web broadcast project for young people with special needs, t-shirt designing, dance festivals and football sessions led by Arsenal Football Club.

All the information on Heatwave can also be found online. By logging on to www.islington.gov.uk/heatwave the full programme of events can be searched by age, date, location and activity type. Or, for those who prefer to get some advice over the phone, a text service is available. Young people can text 'HEAT' to 60777 and will receive a phone call from an advisor who will talk through what's available according to each young person's interests
