Families and sports enthusiasts are queueing up to benefit from a brand new mixed scheme of rented and shared-ownership homes in Islington.

The six-storey block of 16 flats at Globe Court, N4, will provide accommodation for 37 people when fully occupied and are within spitting distance of Arsenal's landmark Emirates Stadium and The Sobell Sports Centre.

14 of the flats are for affordable rent - including two for wheelchair use on the ground floor - and two are shared ownership.

Cllr Terry Stacy, Islington Council's Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Housing and Community Safety, said:

"Islington Council is doing more than many boroughs to meet the demand for affordable housing.

"Last year we worked with developers, housing associations and our housing management partner Homes for Islington to provide over 400 affordable homes to borough residents.

"And there's more good news for those on Islington's housing waiting list. We are shortly starting construction of our first new council housing for a generation and have also identified four new locations across the borough for the second phase of new home building."

Jo Murphy, Director of Housing Services for North Region, Family Mosaic said: "Globe Court is a fantastic example of how well Family Mosaic work with Islington Council and our development partners to provide high quality, affordable accommodation. This previously derelict site, a target for vandals and drug users, is now an attractive place to live."

The site on Tollington Road, N4 - once the home of The Globe pub - had been boarded up for three years prior to its purchase by Family Mosaic. It had also been squatted and was the subject of several police raids.

Cllr Stacy added: "Given the site's chequered past - I'm delighted for local people that the new use is making such a positive contribution to the community."

Islington Council is building the first new council housing for a generation at Boleyn Road, N16 and Armour Close, N7. In addition four new sites for social housing have been identified across the borough.

The north London authority has also been given the title of Regional Homelessness Champions in recognition of its work in reducing the number of empty homes, deconverting flatted properties into family houses and reducing levels of underoccupancy via house swap schemes.

ENDS

Notes to Editors:

14 rental units at Globe Court are let and managed through BME RSL Karin Housing Ltd who provide housing for a wide variety of clients including refugee women, single parents and the homeless.
