Mount Carmel College has been rated as 'good' in a recent Government inspection report that concluded that students 'leave the college as well-rounded, friendly young women, ready to face their futures with confidence.'

Ofsted inspectors praised the 'rapid progress' and achievements that students make at the all-girls' college. At Key Stage 3 (11-14 year-olds) in particular, students 'reach above average standards in English'. As a college with specialist technology status, they also performed well in design and technology classes and have a 'prowess in computing'. Overall, inspectors felt that the students had 'a very clear understanding of the importance of their learning', as a result of which, attendance levels are above average.

Students are highly involved in school life at Mount Carmel and help to create a 'caring and sensitive atmosphere'. Many of them are involved in the college council, peer mentoring and sports leader schemes. This enables the different ethnic groups to 'mix very well together' and leads to 'consistently good, courteous behaviour.' Inspectors felt that Year 10 and 11 students really enjoyed their mentoring roles and were encouraged by the example of members of staff who make themselves available for students, so they know 'there is always good quality, caring help available if needed'.

The 'clear leadership of the principal and his senior staff' was described in the report as being a significant factor in the progress that the college has made in recent years. Under head teacher Paul Kehoe's management, staff are 'well motivated and want the best for all students.' Paul said: "We are delighted with the inspection report which recognises the clear achievements of our students and gives us the way forward to achieve outstanding."

Mount Carmel provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students such as dance, tag rugby and ice-skating. All students also enthusiastically take part in work experience and are 'actively involved in and enjoy their learning'. This enthusiastic approach to education, has been developed in part by the strong relationships between staff and students, which are described as 'excellent.'

Executive Member for Children and Young People, Ursula Woolley said: "I'm pleased to read another positive report for an Islington school. The head and staff at Mount Carmel rightly expect a lot from their students. It's great to see pupils with high aspirations for their own future and particularly good to see girls achieving in the area of design and technology. Congratulations to everyone on the progress made over the last few years."
