Nearly 70 pupils from primary schools across Islington came together at the Town Hall in Upper Street this week to celebrate their achievements as budding scientists.

The CREST Science Awards were handed out to Year 5 (nine year-old) pupils who have shown a real passion and flair for the subject, by attending the SEEDS (Sustainable Environmental Educational Development Sessions) Club. The club involves the Year 5 children teaching science to younger pupils, writing up reports on their experiments and designing new scientific investigations. The Mayor of Islington, Cllr Kasprzyk presented the winners in each of the three categories with certificates and the audience were treated to a performance by children's writer Philip Ardagh and given signed copies of his books.

Anne-Marie McIntyre, a teaching assistant who has been running the SEEDS Club at Highbury Quadrant school for three years said: "I'm really pleased to see the children being rewarded for all the hard work they've put in. Science is a topic that younger children are often really interested in, but sometimes this gets lost as they get older. So I hope all of these children will continue to develop their interest. It's really nice to see the club go full circle so that the Year 2 pupils who joined the club three years ago are now in Year 5 and have started to teach their young schoolmates about science."

Cllr Kasprzyk said: "Congratulations to the winners and all the other young children who have invested all this time to broaden their own understanding of science and pass this knowledge on to others too. They all show great potential in the field of science and I'll be looking out for their names as famous inventors or doctors in the future!"

The SEEDS Club has been running in Islington for three years. Children in 11 schools across the borough spend up to an hour each week during lunch breaks or after school, teaching the club and carrying out scientific activities from planning to conclusion stage.
