Islington Transforms Social Care, Puts People First

Date: 30-Jun-08 by Charles Dean

Users of social services in Islington are about to be consulted on reforms that would put them firmly in control of their lives with personalised services and individual budgets.

The proposals which will be discussed at a meeting of the Council's Executive on 3 July 2008, are part of the council's aim to transform social care from a service-centred model to one that puts people first.

Cllr John Gilbert, Islington Council's Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: "Social care is about to experience a revolution in Islington so it's only right that we seek the involvement of all clients and carers."

"We are clear that involving users in decisions which affect them has clear benefits for everyone and makes sure we provide services that are focused on what people want.

"We've made good progress in user involvement since our Consultation and Partnership Strategy in 2001. Now this report is about how we take it to the next level".

In Islington, service users and carers are already involved in how services are bought and delivered and by whom. Part of the consultation will look at how involvement will be standardised across services and how feedback to users can be improved. Users will get an annual report detailing how their feedback influenced policy and improved services.

ENDS

Notes to Editors:

The council is doing more to listen and act on residents views. Feedback is an important part of the role of the Islington Involvement Network (LINk), the feedback element required in determining the council's Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) rating and the increased importance of resident satisfaction on Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) and Local Area Agreeement (LAA) processes.
