Council vows to fight Post Office threat to another Islington branch

Date: 24-Jun-08 by Susie Rundle

Another Post Office branch in the borough is under threat - just weeks after the combined efforts of the council and community forced Post Offices Ltd bosses into an embarrasing climb-down over plans to shut a popular branch in Essex Road.

Post Offices Ltd today (24 June 2008) announced plans to close the Post Office branch in Goswell Road, EC1 - another area with high levels of deprivation, and many elderly and disabled residents who rely on this service as a life-line. Islington Council - which recently led the successful community campaign to save the Essex Road branch from Post Offices Ltd's national cull - has vowed to fight the plans all the way.

Cllr James Kempton, Leader of Islington Council, said: "We've just put paid to Post Offices plans to take away our branch at Essex Road. I find it astonishing that after strength of local feeling forced them to backtrack on this, they think we won't resist an attempt to shut down Goswell Road. Haven't they got the message? We and our residents will fight plans to close any post office branches in our borough. We know we have the backing of our community - and we will be working together to make Post Offices sit up and take notice."

Cllr Kempton has called Post Office chiefs in for an urgent meeting to discuss their proposals.

ENDS
