It's a new chapter for Islington's libraries as borrowing soars

More and more people across Islington are turning over a new leaf and using their local libraries.<br>Latest figures from Islington Council show 1,271,206 items were borrowed from the borough's 10 libraries in 2007/08.<br>It's an increase of more than 10 per cent from the year before, when 1,152,197 items were borrowed.<br>Also more people are joining up - 16,706 during 2007, compared with 13,900 in the previous year.<br>More books of all kinds - ranging from popular paperback novels to large print titles - have been borrowed, and there has also been an increase in CD and DVD borrowing.<br>Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Cultural Services and Libraries, said: "It's great to see so many people visiting Islington's libraries - we've got some of the best in London.<br>"There really is something for everyone - you can rent hundreds of different DVDs and CDs, borrow books on every topic, or enjoy free internet access."<br>The increase comes during National Year of Reading, and library staff are working hard to bring in even more people.<br>Recent initiatives include offering library membership to residents who came to vote at Finsbury Library in the mayoral elections - 50 people signed up. <br>There have also been campaigns aimed at shoppers in Angel and Nags Head.<br>To start borrowing straight away, drop into any Islington library, or for more information ring 020 7527 6900.<br>
