Two tonnes of items swapped

Ten-year-old Tanya Crewe shows she's game for recycling – as 200 people swapped items at Islington's first 'Give and Take Day'. <br><br>The free event, organised by Islington Council's recycling team, allows residents to bring along unwanted goods to save them heading for landfill. <br><br>A staggering two tonnes of items were given away and swapped at the session, at Ambler Primary School in Finsbury Park, including TVs, computers, bikes and DVDs.<br><br>Councillor Lucy Watt, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "We all throw away loads of things which could be re-used and go to a good home – but we don't know how to actually do this. <br><br>"These 'Give and Take' days could be the answer. <br><br>"It was fantastic to see such a great turnout, but I'm not surprised - where else could you pick up a TV for free?"<br><br>Islington Council is planning to hold several more Give and Take Days this year. <br><br>For more information please call 020 7527 2627.<br><br>In January, Islington Council saw a recycling rate of 28.5 per cent -- the best ever. <br><br>ENDS <br><br>For more information on this news release please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032<br><br>PICTURE CAPTION: Ten-year-old Tanya Crewe with some of the items she swapped at the Give and Take Day
