Fresh funding for disadvantaged communities

Disadvantaged communities in parts of Islington are set to benefit from new funding. <br><br>The Asenal FC Community Benefit Fund is a pot of money available to help set up new community projects, or continue to run existing ones. <br><br>£500,000 will be ploughed into activities for disadvantaged communities in the council areas (known as 'wards') of Holloway, Highbury East and Highbury West.<br><br>Councillor Terry Stacy, Deputy Leader of Islington Council and Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "People living around the stadium have already benefited from new jobs and housing. <br><br>"Now there's extra funding for community projects, which will have a real impact for the most deprived areas. <br><br>"This is all about the council working with Arsenal to release even more money for the local community." <br><br>The funding was secured by Islington Council from Arsenal FC, as part of a planning agreement to build the new Emirates stadium – known as "a section 106 planning agreement".<br><br>The money must benefit people in the surrounding area. <br><br>The council's regeneration service is now inviting Islington-based voluntary, community and faith sector organisations to apply for funding from the Arsenal FC Community Benefit Fund.<br><br>£500,000 is available for projects which will be established during March and April. <br><br>Grants will range from £5,000 to £30,000.<br><br>For more information please call Pascal Coyne on 020 7527 3371, or email regeneration@islington.gov.uk <br><br>The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 17 March 2008. <br><br>ENDS <br><br>For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
